Pelvic floor physical therapy (or pelvic PT) is a specialized type of physical therapy that treats pelvic floor muscle dysfunction through the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular system.

No! It is no longer necessary to have a referral from your doctor to see a physical therapist. A patient can call a physical therapist or clinic directly to make an appointment.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is just like any other type of physical therapy service and should be covered by insurance. When you schedule an appointment our office staff will check with your insurance provider to see if you’re covered before therapy begins.

There are a number of pelvic floor disorders that are treated with pelvic floor physical therapy. They include: urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, painful sex, sexual dysfunction.

A thorough evaluation will be performed which includes a detailed medical history, a biomechanics screening and a pelvic floor muscle examination. After the evaluation, your therapist will explain in detail the findings of the evaluation and will explain to you how treatment should proceed. A personalized treatment plan will then be developed that employs peer-reviewed practices and programs.

While pelvic floor muscle exercises are very important, they are a small part of the care pelvic floor physical therapists provide.

Yes! Male patients can be treated for a variety pelvic floor issues, such as erectile dysfunction, bowel or bladder incontinence, scarring, painful ejaculation, testicular and/or scrotal pain.
